St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church South Cemetery - Town of Sheldon, Wyoming Co., NY

Copyright(c) 2002 by scott_barvian@hotmail.com

Located 1/2 mile south of the church, on the east side of Bartz Road behind a grove of trees. Burials here began in the early 1890's. The cemetery behind the church was expanded sometime after 1900, but the South cemetery remains open, well-maintained, and in use.

Just south of this cemetery is a field with the grave of Rev. Msgr. A. George Koch 1898-1980 (St. Cecilia's pastor 1943-1971) and a large stone cross with a plaque reading:

Site of first Roman Catholic Church of Sheldon 1839-1848 (now St. Cecilia's).
A log church (28' x 32') was built here during the time St. John Neumann served Sheldon 1836-1840.
This cross (erected 1976) came from St. Joseph's New Cathedral in Buffalo.
Historical articles note that the land for the log church was acquired in 1839, and that an early cemetery was opened in 1836. If a cemetery existed at the cabin site, no traces of it are found today and no records are known to exist.
